Cant shoot mutated dogs!

So ive reached a point in the game where resources arent a issue anymore. Im on day 27 and i actually go into the darkwoods to hunt chompers, banshees and mutated dogs. I've tried it a dozen times and its impossible to hit the mutated dogs with either a bolt action rifle or the pistol. All melee weapons work and also the dubble barrel shotgun works.
